HOW I TURNED MY BIGGEST WEAKNESS INTO MY BIGGEST STRENGTH

When I was a kid, I had difficulty remembering stuff. I would go to market to buy 5 things but could remember only 3 and had to have another round to buy the missing 2. I started making small lists but would forget to put them in my pocket… yes it was terrible. But, here comes the surprise… I always used to top the exams! If I try to explain my brain function, it would go like this… I have very strong processor (RAM) but very limited memory (ROM).
In last decade of 20th century, some parts of the world still had an educational system which was emphasizing a lot on remembering things rather than understanding and implementing knowledge. I believe, I was among those who rebelled against that system, survived and in fact thrived. How I could do that? Answer is to question. Question everything. Question until the concept sinks into your brain’s operating system and then it becomes your second nature to solve problems without remembering stuff.
When I started my professional career, my forgetfulness became even more challenging. I was doing great on some tasks while completely missing out on few which happened to slip of my mind. I used to make ‘To Do Lists’ but would forget where I noted those tasks. Then I decided to overcome this weakness. As a Finance professional, I was using Microsoft Excel on daily basis and to me it made perfect sense to have my tasks listed on Excel too, so I made a simple ‘To Do List’ which I enhanced further by putting some Macros and organizing techniques. I developed this simple model in 2008 and have been using since then.
I have worked in 3 large companies by now and I have been known for “getting things done”. For last 10 years, project management and delivering within timeline have been my core strengths and I must admit that a lot of this is due to my excel based ‘To Do List’
